Dr Doric Wong

Senior Consultant

Prof Wong is Senior Consultant in the Surgical Retina Department at the Singapore National Eye Centre. He is currently the Centre’s Chief Risk Officer and the Chair of the Professionalism and Ethics Council. He was Head of the Retina Service and later the Retina Centre from 2005, completing his term in 2016.

He is the President of the College of Ophthalmology, Academy of Medicine, Singapore, and represents the College in several committees in the Ministry of Health. He represents Singapore on the Council of the ASEAN Ophthalmological Society and is the Chair of the Society’s Scientific Committee.

A/Prof Caroline Chee

Specialises in the management of retinal diseases

A/Prof Caroline Chee specialises in the management of retinal diseases, including age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vascular disorders, retinal dystrophies, retinoblastoma, intraocular infections, retinal detachment, macular surgery (such as for macular holes, epiretinal membranes and myopic macular schisis), and retinal trauma.

She has been and continues to be Principal Investigator or Site Principal investigator for several multicentre randomised clinical trials, and involved with other retinal related research. She was Principal Investigator in Singapore for the Retina Implant for Retinitis Pigmentosa.

 

She is the Department Director for Postgraduate Training, and has been examiner for the Master of Medicine exam (National University of Singapore), Fellowship and Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Fellowship of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (UK), and the Fellowship of the Academy of Medicine of Singapore. A/Prof Chee underwent general ophthalmic and retinal training in Singapore before proceeding to retinal fellowships in the United Kingdom at Addenbrooke Hospital, Cambridge and at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London from 1992-1993.

Dr Adrian Koh

Senior Consultant

Dr Adrian Koh is a Founding Partner and Senior Consultant at the Eye & Retina Surgeons, Camden Medical; Director, Retinal Centre International, and Vice-President of the International Retinal Foundation. He is Visiting Consultant to the Vitreoretinal Service, Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC) and Visiting Consultant to the Eye Institute, Tan Tock Seng Hospital; He is Council Member of the College of Ophthalmologists, Academy of Medicine, Singapore. He is the immediate Past President of the Singapore Society of Ophthalmology.

He was Congress Vice-President & Secretary-General of the 21st Congress of the Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO) held in Singapore. He is the founding Chairman and Honorary Adviser to the Retinitis Pigmentosa Society of Singapore.

 

He is also member of Retina International and the AsiaPacific Advisory Board for Photodynamic Therapy, Lucentis and Medical Retina. His past appointments include Deputy Head, Retina Research Group, SERI. Director, SNEC-SERI Visual Electrophysiology Laboratory; Director for the Undergraduate Curriculum in Ophthalmology, National University of Singapore (NUS); Visiting Consultant, National University Hospital (NUH); Treasurer-General of WORLDEYES; Head, Medical Photography Department, SNEC; Adjunct Scientist, Singapore Eye Research Institute (SERI). Dr Koh completed Fellowships in Medical Retina at Moorfields Eye Hospital & Institute of Ophthalmology, London, UK (1998 – 1999) and at the Jules Stein Eye Institute, UCLA, Los Angeles, and USA (1999 -2000).

 

He trained under Medical Retina specialists, Professors Alan C Bird, Susan Lightman and Graham Holder from Moorfields Eye Institute of London, and Professors Bradley Straatsma, John Heckenlively, Steven Schwartz, Kent Small and Marc Yoshizumi of the Jules Stein Eye Institute, UCLA. The recipient of numerous awards, Dr Koh has authored or edited many publications in the field of ophthalmology. His areas of expertise include degenerative macular disease such as age related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, choroidal neovascularisation, inherited retinal diseases such as retinitis pigmentosa, visual electrophysiology, fundus angiography and retinal vascular disease.

 

In diagnostics, his expertise is identifying and evaluating retinal diseases. He receives referrals from eye and retinal specialists both locally and from the region, for expert opinion and advice on management of these complex and sometimes rare cases. In the field of visual electrophysiology, he studied under Professors Graham Holder and Geoffrey Arden and helped establish an ISCEV-standards visual electrophysiology laboratory at the Singapore National Eye Centre. In the field of macular degeneration, he specializes in the use of verteporfin photodynamic therapy, anti-VEGF therapy and combination therapy in Asia.

 

He also specializes in the use of laser techniques using the PASCAL system, and intravitreal adjunctive therapies such as Lucentis and Triamcinolone for the treatment of severe diabetic retinopathy, diabetic macular oedema, retinal vein obstruction and other retinal vascular diseases.

Assoc Prof Gavin Tan

Surgical and Medical Vitreo-Retinal Specialist and Consultant

Assoc Prof Gavin Tan is a surgical and medical vitreo-retinal specialist and consultant cataract surgeon with the Retina Centre of the Singapore National Eye Centre(SNEC). He is actively involved with academic research on diabetic retinopathy (DR), where he played a key figure in developing and implementing the Singapore Integrated Diabetic Retinopathy Programme (SIDRP), which allowed DR screenings to be analysed from a centralised screening centre and sped up eye screening diagnosis time to just under an hour.

Assoc Prof Tan is also studying the use of novel approaches such as optical coherence tomography, automated detection of retinopathy and personalised screening intervals to further improve the cost effectiveness and efficacy of diabetic retinopathy screening.

 

Assoc Prof Tan’s exemplary work has won him the SingHealth Outstanding Clinician Researcher Award. He was also conferred the Ministry of Health (MOH) Transition Award to study new imaging techniques that can improve understanding of diabetic eye diseases and their management, as well as to reduce diabetes-led blindness.

Dr Paul Zhao

Senior Consultant Ophthalmologist (Surgical and Medical Retina)

Dr Paul Zhao, a Senior Consultant Ophthalmologist, graduated from the National University of Singapore in 2002. He went through specialty training in Ophthalmology in Singapore with a Masters in Ophthalmology and obtained his Fellowship with the Royal college of Surgeons of Edinburgh(FRCSEd) and Academy of Medicine (FAMS). He subsequently went on to pursue a retina fellowship at Queen Mary Hospital, Hong Kong in 2012. 

Dr Zhao performs retina surgery for conditions such as retinal detachment, macular holes, epiretinal membranes, diabetic eye disease (tractional retinal detachment, vitreous hemorrhage) and vitreomacular traction. He also has a special interest in the management of subluxed and dislocated lenses and the use of sutureless techniques for the scleral fixation of intraocular lenses. He has significant experience in the medical management of retina patients with age-related macular degeneration, retinal vascular disorders, diabetic eye disease, retinal dystrophies and intraocular infections. Dr Zhao also performs complex cataract surgery and is trained in using femtosecond laser assisted cataract surgery and the use of intraocular lenses for correction of astigmatism and presbyopia.

 

Dr Zhao was previously the Head of the Vision Performance Centre, Military Medicine Institute where he oversaw the refractive surgery program and performed refractive surgery for servicemen. He is an active Operationally-Ready National Serviceman and holds the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

 

Dr Zhao is a visiting Senior Consultant Ophthalmologist at National University Hospital, Alexandra Hospital and Ng Teng Fong Hospital. He is also concurrently the Head of Alexandra Hospital Ophthalmology Department and has held an Assistant Professor appointment at the National University of Singapore. Dr Zhao has presented at local and international conferences, and has over 20 publications in peer-reviewed journals. He has also been involved in several pharmaceutical trials and collaborative clinical research with A*Star, SERI and other restructured hospitals in Singapore.

Dr Lee Shu Yen

Senior Consultant Ophthalmologist and Vitreoretinal Surgeon

Dr Lee is a senior consultant ophthalmologist and vitreoretinal surgeon at Advanced Eye Clinic and Surgery. She previously served as the Head of the Surgical Retina department at the Singapore National Eye Centre leading the team that provided the majority of surgical retina coverage in Singapore.

She has a special interest in retinal detachment surgery, complications of high myopia, diabetic retinopathy as well as macula surgery. In addition, Dr Lee is a skilled cataract surgeon who is comfortable with the various types of intraocular lens corrections to help patients achieve their desired visual outcomes as well as the surgical skills and experience to manage complex cataract issues including sclera fix IOLs and post cataract surgery complications. Dr Lee led an illustrious career in SNEC before bringing this wealth of experience with her to private practice.

 

She was appointed Clinical Associate Professor with the Duke NUS Graduate Medical School for her key role in setting up the ophthalmology program for the medical school. Her strong interest in nurturing the next generation of ophthalmologist led her to serve as a core faculty member for the SNEC Residency Program and also was actively involved in the teaching of local as well as international fellows in the Surgical Retina program.

 

She has been frequently invited to participate and speak at local, regional as well as international ophthalmology and Retinal conferences to speak on topics ranging from retinal disease management, imaging and surgical techniques. Dr Lee is active in retina research with publications in the fields of retinal complications of pathologic myopia, retinal detachments, giant retinal tears, diabetic retinopathy, age-related macula degeneration (AMD) as well as in gene therapy.

 

She also chaired the SNEC Research and Innovation Committee which provided pilot grant funding at the Singapore Eye Research Institute (SERI). In addition to her clinical and academic responsibilities, Dr Lee also actively supports philanthropy and chaired the SingHealth-Duke NUS Charity Gala from 2017 with successes in fund raising efforts. At SNEC, she chaired the Grants Committee which oversees the disbursement of funds raised through VisionSave, the charity arm of SNEC. Dr Lee was the first lady ophthalmologist who was elected as President of the Singapore Society of Ophthalmologists in 2013, a position she held for almost 10 years, during which she enabled the set up of the Young Ophthalmologists section and spearheaded the greater involvement of Singapore ophthalmology in the region when she served as a council member with the Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO) and the ASEAN Ophthalmology Society (AOS). Dr Lee was a member of the executive committee of the College of Ophthalmologists, Academy of Medicine Singapore, with roles as Secretary and then as Vice-President of the College. These culminated in Dr Lee organising the (spell out) APAO in Singapore in 2017. Dr Lee was additionally appointed to the MOH committee Diabetes Taskforce which was set up to fight Diabetes nationally.

Professor Gemmy Cheung

Clinician Scientist

Professor Gemmy Cheung is currently the Arthur Lim Professor in Ophthalmology at Duke-NUS Medical School, National University of Singapore (NUS). She is the Director of Translation Clinic Research at the Singapore Eye Research Institute (SERI). Her research interests focus on Asian retinal diseases, specifically age-related macular degeneration (AMD), polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV) and myopic macular degeneration.

Prof Cheung has published over 300 peer-reviewed articles mostly in age-related macular degeneration and polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy. She has contributed to major clinical trials in therapies for AMD and PCV. She serves on the executive committee of the Asia-Pacific Vitreoretina society, the International Retinal imaging Society and the Macula Society.

Dr Rajagopalan Rajesh

Head of Vitreoretina and a Senior Consultant

Dr Rajagopalan Rajesh is currently the Head of Vitreoretina and a Senior Consultant at the National Healthcare Group Eye Institute @ Tan Tock Seng Hospital. He completed his postgraduate training in ophthalmology at Madras Medical College Regional Institute of Ophthalmology, Chennai, India. He was a university topper in his post graduate diploma in ophthalmology and was the best outgoing student of his batch during his Master of Surgery (ophthalmology). He underwent vitreo-retinal fellowship training at Sydney Eye Hospital, Sydney. 

His special interest is in diabetic retinopathy but he is also very experienced in the management of vitreo-retinal conditions and age-related macular degeneration. He specialises in complex retinal detachment surgery.

Dr Su Xinyi (PhD, MMed, FAMS, MBChir)

s Executive Director

Dr Su Xinyi (PhD, MMed, FAMS, MBChir) is Executive Director, Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology (IMCB), Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR). She also serves as the Research Director overseeing the Translational Retinal Research Laboratory at IMCB. She is passionate about building bridges between science and medicine. Her research interests are in translational research for retinal surgery and therapeutics.

Concurrently, Xinyi is also

(i) Senior Consultant Ophthalmologist,

(ii) Research Director of the Department of Ophthalmology, and

(iii) Co-Director of the Centre for Innovation and Precision Eye Health, at the National University Hospital.

 

She is also an Associate Professor at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore, and Deputy Head of the Clinician Scientist Academy, National University Healthcare System. She also holds an Adjunct Assistant Professor appointment at the Mechanobiology Institute, NUS, and a joint appointment of Clinician Scientist at the Singapore Eye Research Institute.

Dr Karen Chia

Senior ConsultanT

Dr Karen Chia is a Senior Consultant with the National Healthcare Group Eye Institute @ Tan Tock Seng Hospital, Singapore. She received her medical training from the National University of Singapore. She underwent postgraduate training in Ophthalmology, and was awarded Master of Medicine (Ophthalmology) from the National University of Singapore. She is a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and was subsequently elected Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, upon completion of her specialist training.

Her areas of clinical interest include Medical Retina, Cataracts and General Ophthalmology. She completed a clinical fellowship in Medical Retina at the NHG Eye Institute @ Tan Tock Seng Hospital.

 

She is part of the Singapore Integrated Diabetic Retinopathy Programme (SiDRP) team that won the National Healthcare Group team recognition (Silver award) and National Clinical Excellence Team award. She participates in clinical research and has presented in ophthalmology conferences both locally and internationally.

 

She is active in medical undergraduate education and holds the appointment of Clinical Teacher, Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, Nanyang Technological University and Clinical Senior Lecturer at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore.
